Unique Museums

Wherever you are in the world, people are constantly recommending museums. There are the obvious ones, like MOMA and the Louvre, but here are a list of some of the overlooked museums I've particularly enjoyed.

1. Pitt Rivers Museum- Oxford, England

This museum in Oxford offers a look at interesting curiosities, such as shrunken heads and the famous 'witch in a bottle.' Some of these objects were recently featured in the Spellbound Exhibit at the Ashmolean Museum, but Pitt Rivers has so many treasures that are interesting to look at if you stop in.

2. Norsk Folkemuseum- Oslo, Norway

This is honestly one of my favorite museums of all time. It is partially open air, partially indoors. Traditional Norwegian buildings were brought into the museum grounds in 1894 by historian Hans Aall and King Oscar II in an attempt to preserve Norwegian heritage. Some of the buildings still have interesting, wood carved exteriors and painted walls. In the summer months, you can buy berries from the stall outside and sit in the grass near the famous Gol Stave Church. When I first went there I felt as though I walked into a Miyazaki movie.

3. National Museum of Scotland- Edinburgh, Scotland

This museum is unique because of its beautiful architecture, paired with its fascinating exhibits, like Dolly the Sheep and the Millennium Clock. The building itself embraces its Victorian ancestry. It has a high ceiling that is like an old train station or a greenhouse.

4. V&A- London, England

No list would be complete without the Victoria and Albert museum. Although this is a commonly recommended museum, it is well worth a mention here because of its amazing collections and aesthetic appeal. I've gone nearly every time I've been to London and I still haven't seen a quarter of it.
